Solusi Listrik bagi industri, "BLOOM ENERGY"

VIVAnews - Google, eBay, FedEx, Walmart and Coca-Cola merupakan contoh perusahaan yang telah menggunakan pembangkit energi yang pengembangannya merupakan teknologi yang tadinya akan digunakan untuk program ruang angkasa ke planet Mars.

Bloom Energy, perusahaan teknologi asal Silicon Valley, telah membuat teknologi yang mampu mengonversi udara dan bahan bakar menjadi listrik melalui proses kimia yang ramah lingkungan.

Bahan bakar seperti biogas dan bahan bakar alami lainnya dihantarkan melalui anoda, sementara udara dihantarkan lewat katoda. Di antara anoda dan katoda terdapat elektrolit. Ion oksigen kemudian bereaksi dengan bahan bakar untuk memproduksi listrik.

“Selama bertahun tahun, kita mendengar janji-janji bahwa akan ada solusi energi yang baru, terjangkau, dan bersih,” kata John Doerr, salah satu direksi Bloom Energy, seperti VIVAnews kutip dari Irishtimes, 16 April 2010. “Kini Bloom telah menghadirkan teknologi tersebut,” ucapnya.

Bloom Energy dikembangkan oleh Dr K.R Sridhar, seorang professor di bidang aeronautical and mechanical engineering, mantan penasihat NASA. Saat terlibat dalam proyek ke Mars, ia menyadari bahwa teknologi yang sedang mereka kerjakan (menggunakan kombinasi energi surya dan air untuk menyediakan udara dan bahan bakar untuk pergi ke Mars) bisa diterapkan di bumi.

Diproduksi menggunakan material terjangkau (komponen utama pembangkit listrik tersebut adalah ribuan keramik padat yang terbuat dari bubuk serupa pasir), setiap server yang berukuran satu ruang parkir mobil mampu menyediakan daya sebesar 100kw.

Perangkat ini sangat efisien dan mudah diinstalasikan serta dirawat. Selain itu, pembangkit ini juga mampu menyediakan daya secara konstan, tidak seperti pembangkit listrik tenaga angin atau tenaga surya yang tidak selalu ada.

Dibandingkan dengan sumber energi konvensional berbasis fosil, energi ini mampu mereduksi emisi CO2 dari konsumsi daya antara 40 sampai 100 persen. Bloom Energy mengklaim bahkan teknologi mereka 67 persen lebih ramah lingkungan dibanding sumber daya berbasis batu bara.

Setiap unit berkapasitas 100kw disebutkan dapat memasok energi untuk 100 rumah atau kantor berukuran 9100 meter persegi. Semakin besar perusahaan, unit pembangkit listrik bisa ditambahkan. Caranya cukup dengan menambahkan unit baru dan menghubungkan tiap-tiap pembangkit listrik tersebut.

* Carbon Sequestration: The electrochemical reaction occurring within Bloom Energy systems generates electricity, heat, some H2O, and pure CO2. Traditionally, the most costly aspect of carbon sequestration is separating the CO2 from the other effluents. The pure CO2 emission allows for easy and cost-effective carbon sequestration from the Bloom systems.
